What You'll Need

Step-by-Step

  1. This is a 2-day, 2-step process. Plan accordingly.
  2. STEP 1 — HENNA (Day 1): In a glass or ceramic bowl (never metal), mix 100g Henna Powder and 2 tbsp Amla Powder. Add warm water gradually until you have a thick paste — like yogurt consistency.
  3. Cover the bowl with cling film and let it rest for 4-6 hours at room temperature. The henna releases its dye-active molecules during this time. The paste will darken from green-brown to deep brown.
  4. Wear old clothes and gloves. Apply the henna paste to clean, slightly damp hair, section by section, root to tip. Use a hair colouring brush.
  5. Cover with a shower cap and old towel. Leave on for 2-3 hours. Henna alone gives a vivid red-orange tint.
  6. Rinse with plain water until water runs clear (no shampoo). Air dry naturally.
  7. STEP 2 — INDIGO (Day 2 — important to wait 24 hours): In a clean glass bowl, mix 100g Indigo Powder with just enough warm water to form a paste — like cake batter. Use IMMEDIATELY (Indigo loses dye potency within 30 minutes of mixing).
  8. Apply over the henna-treated hair, root to tip. Cover with a shower cap.
  9. Leave on for 1-2 hours. The henna+indigo combination produces deep brown to black colour, depending on application time.
  10. Rinse with plain water only — do NOT shampoo for 24 hours. The colour develops over the next 48 hours.
  11. Frequency: Every 4-6 weeks for root touch-ups.
  12. Storage: Powders only — store in airtight containers in a cool dry place. Lasts 1 year.

Pro Tips

ALWAYS do henna first, then indigo second — never mix them. Skipping amla makes hair stiff. Use gloves. Color deepens over 48 hours.
